Do you ever notice people with headphones on the train, and try to guess what they are listening to, based on their outfits?

Not to get all mathematical, but we think it is important to examine the correlation between personal style and music.  We did, through the interviews below.

We also think street-style is as relevant to fashion as DJ’s are to good night dancing. The element we sometimes find missing in street-style photos, is the ease and elegance of everyday people sans fame and posy glamour. So our photographer (thanks Joseph!) took to the streets of New York to find those people, who don’t get dressed to have their outfits photographed, but choose their armours to express rhythm, color, and place.

Read through, enjoy, dig the style and sounds of the people of New York.

Well, I had nothing to wear since I was in my boyfriend’s house. Well you look nice.  Yea, I guess so.

Your favorite era in music and one specific item “clothing/accessory” that stands out to you about that era? I’d have to say today’s music is my favorite era of music. Why today? I don’t really like the old stuff, when it comes to music. Even though today’s music came from the old sounds. I just like today’s stuff because it’s exciting and the artists are more fashionable. So what’s cool now that wasn’t cool back then? Lots of brands emerged and got popular, and how you dress is more important now than ever. Today’s trends are more fashionable and well colored

Who’s your favorite artist right now? I really like Ellie Goulding and the way she dresses. Would you hang out with Ellie Goulding? And where would you guys hangout? We’ll definitely go shopping because I really like her style, I also like Rihanna sometimes. Why just sometimes? Rihanna sometimes tries too hard.

The track makes me feel extra lyrical and it puts me in a good mood. What do you mean by “feeling lyrical”? “Feeling Lyrical” means I feel inspired to write something lyrical and profound.  Do all hiphop songs make you feel that way? No. I listen to different songs for different reasons.

Which songs have been on repeat on your playlist recently and how have they affected the way you dress? Actually I’ve had my own songs on repeat. Oh really what are your songs called? My remix to “Catharsis” by Mad Lib, my remix of “Resurrection” by Common and a song I made with an upcoming Bronx producer called Gambei. Interesting, what kind music is it? Its hiphop.

When you get dressed in the morning, do you think of a song? Yea, I listen to “Million Dollar bills” by Lorde and “I feel good” by James Brown.

Artist that you are inlove with their music right now? The newest artist I am listening is the New Zealand artist Lorde. Why? She incorporates meaningful lyrics with bass thumping electro beats. Plus I can vibe to her sound.

Your favorite era in music and one specific item “clothing/accessory” that stands out to you about that era? My favorite era in music is the early 90s. And the afro pick is my favorite accessory used in that era. This is because I love the hip-hop group Digable Planets and they are known for their use and lyrics about their blowout combs.

Which songs have been on repeat on your playlist recently and how have they affected the way you dress? The songs don’t really affect the way I dress. I just dress with whatever it’s in my closet.

When you get dressed in the morning, what track do you vibe to? It depends how I feel. Sometimes I put on that Finally Rich album by Chief, but to keep it simple I listen to everything. Do people say you look like a lot of dread headed musicians? Well not really,  I don’t wear my hair over my face a lot like most dread heads do.

What artist are you knocking to?  Im knocking to a lot of the new stuff out. Like the Yeezus album, Drake’s newly released songs, Future and reggae.

What your favorite era of music ? I especially like the old school reggae and hip-hop. For raggae I listen to Beres Hammond, Lucky Dube, Burning Spear, UB40, Shabba Ranks, Peter Tosh, Lady Saw, Alpha Blondie. Oh snap, I grew up on those island sounds. I own most of those original records. Do you like the style of fashion associated with reggae music? Not really, I like 80s and 90s they were the best dressed era, their swag was out of this world. I like the hair style and color, like In Living Color!

What’s your favorite accessory that you are wearing right now? My new Nikes Foamposites and my leather hat.

collage 11

Witchy

Name? My name is Witchy, I know it’s not a commonly used name. I mean you don’t see a lot of Witchy’s walking around.

Age? 20, but I’m almost 21!

What borough do you re? I rep Brooklyn strongly. Do you like the way Brooklynites dress? Well, they dress very comfortably. Actually it sort of depends on the part of Brooklyn you are from. The rather “safer” or “better” areas have a more metro style while the “hood” areas have a more street style of dressing. I like a mixture of both.

Which songs have been on repeat on your playlist recently and how have they affected the way you dress? Michael Jackson “Smile” is been on constant rotation for me lately, I think it affects my mood, rather than the way I dress. The song makes me, well, smile! You seem to be a Michael Jackson fan, can you do any of his moves? Yea, I do a pretty good moonwalk. Oh, really, can you show me? I could, but not in these Jordans

When you get dressed in the morning, do you think of a song? Not really, I am usually in a rush to catch my morning train to work or school. I don’t have time for music.

What inspired your outfit this morning? The city influenced my outfit! Whenever I come to the city I notice the colors, patterns and individuality everyone expresses through clothing. With this outfit I tried to show what I like and what I think is cool

Artist that you are inlove with their music right now? A good amount of new hip-hop is being released, I am still listening to its content to judge who my favorite is.

Your favorite era in music and one specific item “clothing/accessory” that stands out to you about that era?My favorite era is of music is definitely the 80s and 90s. First the 80s music created most of the rap sample used in the 90s. However, the 90s was bursting with creativity and color. Everyone wore bright and bold colors and trends were set constantly. I do prefer the 80s as far as music goes because I am a very big Michael Jackson fan.

What’s your favorite thing that you are wearing right now? My G-Shock watch

What’s your favorite genre of music? I’ll say alternative, even punk

When you get dressed in the morning, do you think of a song? Well the music I listen to in the morning depends on the day. What about 7 am on a Tuesday morning? On that time I’ll be going to work, so Ill say Eminem Ok cool, what album? Recovery.

Your favorite era in music and one specific item “clothing/accessory” that stands out to you about that era? It’s the 90s! I feel like in that time lyrics mattered a bit more than they do now. Music of this time seem to focus more on the sound, which is cool and great stuff is being created, but we are forgetting words. Would you say producers got better and singers got worse? No. Singers got lazy because producers sounds can carry them on their shoulders. I also feel they make more money that way because people do crave more sound than lyrics these days.

What’s your favorite thing that you are wearing right now? My beads. Are those Ghanaian beads? They are not Ghanaian beads, they are similar but authentic Ghaninan beads would be made of baked clay. My beads are just wooden.

Who inspires your style? No one particularly really, at least consciously. Are your clothes randomly picked? Actually my entire wordrobe is of a certain style, it basic but at the same time not understated.

No, there was a pile on. Cool, what is that? It’s when everyone’s goal is to get to the mic and everyone piles on top of each other. Did you get hurt? I broke my glasses, so I guess that was the highlight of that event

When you get dressed in the morning, do you think of a song? Yea, I usually start the day slow, so I play music by the band called Basement

What inspired your outfit this morning? Nothing really, I usually just threw this on. Its either this or band tee shirts. What’s the most worn band tee you have? Probably my Wonder Years tee shirt. Does the shirt have a special meaning? I’ve listened to their album called the Upsides at least a 100 timess! Wow, that’s very serious! Yeah I know.
